Kenyan court upholds ban on female genital mutilation


The Kenya High Court on Wednesday refused to allow female circumcision for consenting adults, saying unlike the male cut it does not have health benefits and reduces the wellbeing of the woman it is performed on and in some cases can lead to death.
The ruling by three High Court justices against the petition filed by Tatu Kamau said evidence presented showed women in the communities that practise female circumcision – widely referred to as female genital mutilation (FGM) because of its adverse effects – do not have a choice.
Kamau argued many women want to undergo circumcision, but the law prevents them. ....

WINDHOEK-The Chinese embassy in Namibia and Chinese-owned mining company Swakop Uranium, donated 1 million Namibian dollars ($69,000) to the One Economy Foundation founded by the First Lady of Namibia, Monica Geingos on Feb 18.
At the donation handover ceremony, the first lady said that the money will be mainly used for the#BeFree campaign, which she launched in 2016.
The campaign, undertaken with the assistance of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities and the organization s joint program to combat HIV and AIDS, was inspired by the latter s drive to ensure an AIDS-free generation by 2020 through the Start Free, Stay Free, AIDS-Free initiative. ....

President George M. Weah has told Ivorian refugees living in Bahn, Nimba County, to protect Liberia and respect the laws if they must live here freely.
The Liberian Leader made the statement when he dedicated 93 durable housing units that were built for integrating Ivorian refugees.
Out of the 93-housing units, 10 were built with support from the EU/UN Spotlight Initiative through the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and Plan Liberia with the remaining 15 expected soon.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency), constructed the remaining 83 in collaboration with the government of Liberia through the African Initiative for reconstruction and Development (AIRD).   ....
