From the outset, the city-owned building was slated to be a temporary space for the shelter, but the group was under the impression it had more time.
The Open Door is extremely disappointed and appalled that the city would make a decision like this and that there are some councillors that feel that this is appropriate for clients, said Jessica Hutton, executive director of the Open Door Association.
Obviously, our stance is that these are humans that are very sick and need a lot of help. And with no place to go, we have monumental concerns about what s going to happen to the population. ....

2020 brought with it a global pandemic, but, even as the City of Wetaskiwin Council and Administration worked at keeping people safe, helping businesses stay afloat and run the City, there were moments of hope and progress.
During his annual State of the City address at the March 11 Leduc and Wetaskiwin Regional Chamber of Commerce meeting, held virtually, Wetaskiwin Mayor Tyler Gandam took participants for a walk down Memory Lane.

“It has now been a full year since our community was first impacted by the virus, and I want to acknowledge anyone whose life was touched by loss since the pandemic started,” said Gandam. “Whether this loss was a result of COVID, or you were unable to attend the funeral of a loved one due to public health restrictions, this has not been an easy year.” ....

Long-awaited homeless shelter opens in Wetaskiwin, still in search of a permanent home

A long-awaited homeless shelter finally opened in Wetaskiwin last November, but the facility is still looking for a permanent location to call home.
The Integrated Response Hub opened eight weeks ago to respond to a long-standing need in the city for an overnight shelter. The hub offers around-the-clock intake and a variety of support programs. Since opening, 195 different people have used the shelter.
But its downtown location inside the Wetaskiwin Civic Building is still a problem for business owners in the area, city government and even for the agency operating the shelter. ....
