On May 20, 2020, devastating Cyclone Amphan made landfall on Jammu island near West Bengal, Bangladesh, with wind speeds of approximately 140 km/hour.
The cyclone affected 10 million people from 19 coastal districts in Bangladesh, of which nine were severely impacted. The Government undertook a massive evacuation of 2.4 million people in 12,078 cyclone shelters, and 26 people died.
“Today we remember those who lost their lives in the devastating Cyclone Amphan in India and Bangladesh,” said Ramesh Singh, Country Director at CARE Bangladesh. “This was only an example of how multiple climatic disasters can cause havoc in Bangladesh, causing loss and damage to lives and property. The Information Management Working Group (IMWG) supports the Humanitarian Coordination Task Team (HCTT) to strengthen the coordination of information management activities with government and non-government actors, across different clusters/sectors and areas of responsibility. The IMWG is co-chaired by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and the UN Resident Coordinator s Office (UNRCO), and aims to bring together information management focal persons from government, national and international organizations, the academia, private sector and donors in Bangladesh.
The formation of the Bangladesh IMWG is premised on UN General Assembly Resolution 59/2121 that calls upon States, the United Nations and other relevant actors, as appropriate, to assist in addressing knowledge gaps in disaster management and risk reduction by identifying ways of improving systems and networks for the collection and analysis of information on disasters, vulnerability and risk to facilitate inform ....
