Join the Oshawa Museum for some Yoga in the Garden

Come down to the Henry House Heritage Gardens and enjoy a morning of yoga.
Oshawa Museum is offering up some summer fun with Yoga in the Garden, in partnership with the Durham Yoga Community.
Yoga instructors from throughout Durham Region will be leading yoga classes in the Henry House Heritage Gardens. Registration is required in advance, and participants are required to bring their own mats.
Yoga in the Garden will run on Friday mornings from August 6 through to September 3 from 9 to 10 a.m. – rain or shine.

Oshawa City Council has given heritage designations to two significant landmarks in the city.
Council endorsed a heritage designation for the whole of Lakeview Park and the Second Marsh under the
Ontario Heritage Act at its March 29, 2021 meeting.
Regional and City Councillor Brian Nicholson says this is a “signature motion” for the city to give these sites heritage designations, who notes the reaction from the community has been universal in support of the designations.

Then, starting in January, the lectures focused on home-grown information. Canada once had a large number of independent auto companies, ranging from those that turned out only a few cars before they went under, to far more successful brands with names like McKay, Tudhope, Regal, and Gray-Dort.
The McLaughlin Carriage Company, located in Oshawa, would go from horse-drawn to horseless carriages, and eventually become General Motors of Canada. Ford of Canada started when Gordon McGregor, president of the Walkerville Wagon Company near Windsor, Ontario, approached Henry Ford in 1904 to build his cars under license. Walter Chrysler had taken over an automaker called Maxwell, which had a factory in Windsor. After he started making cars under his own name in 1924, that Ontario factory would become the Chrysler Corporation of Canada.

Archivist, Jennifer Weymark, explains how the Oshawa Museum learned about one of the first Black families in Oshawa.
This lecture traces the lives of one of Oshawa’s first Black families. We follow the matriarch Wealthy as she travels from Vermont to Lower Canada and finally Upper Canada. Four generations of this family, living everyday lives, have exposed the biases and prejudice of the time, but also the strength and courage of conviction they had.

The City of Oshawa has started to plan for its 100
th anniversary celebrations in 2024.
Members of the city’s community centennial committee will work over the next four years to provide input, collaborate, plan and execute the city’s 100
th anniversary events, activities and initiatives that will take place in 2024.
“It will certainly be exciting anticipating what project or projects our Community Centennial Committee will come up with,” says Councillor Rick Kerr, chair of the community services committee. “We are certainly represented by a capable and diverse group of citizens who, I’m sure, are equally excited about their upcoming efforts.”
