THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rain lashed Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod on Tuesday under the influence of Cyclone Yaas. Low-lying areas in the capital were inundated following the rain. According to India Meteorological Department, Kasaragod received 9 cm rain during the 12 hours that ended on 8.30 pm on Tuesday followed by Thiruvananthapuram city with 7 cm. The Thampanoor KSRTC bus stand and railway station premises were flooded as heavy rain lashed the capital in the evening. 
IMD has sounded yellow alert across the state except in Thrissur, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, warning of isolated heavy showers on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the southwest Monsoon has advanced into some parts of Maldives-Comorin area and more parts of Southwest and Southeast Bay of Bengal on Tuesday.  ....

Cyclone Yaas to intensify into very severe cyclonic storm in next 12 hours

New Delhi [India], May 25 (ANI): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted that the cyclonic storm Yaas is going to intensity into a very severe cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours.
The severe cyclonic storm Yaas over east-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of about 9 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 9 UTC of May 24 over east-central Bay of Bengal, IMD said in its bulletin.
It is very likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. It would continue to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach northwest Bay of Bengal near North Odisha and West Bengal coasts by May 26 early morning, the weather agency said. ....

Cyclone Yaas: Red alert issued for four districts in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Ahead the predicted May 26 landfall of cyclone Yaas in coastal areas of the Odisha, the state on Tuesday (May 25) issued a red alert warning for Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur and Balasore districts, which are likely to be affected with heavy rainfall.
Umashankar Das, Deputy Director of India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar said, A red alert, i.e. extremely heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, and Balasore for today. The rainfall will exceed more than 20 cm.
The official said that an orange alert, i.e. heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khorda, and Puri today, news agency PTI reported.  ....

Thousands evacuated in India as strong Cyclone Yaas inches closer


Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated in low-lying areas of two Indian states and moved to cyclone shelters to escape a powerful storm barreling towards the eastern coast.
Cyclone Yaas is set to turn into a “very severe cyclonic storm” with sustained wind speeds of up to 177 kilometres (110 miles) per hour, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.
The cyclone is expected to make landfall early on Wednesday in Odisha and West Bengal states.
The cyclone which comes amid a devastating coronavirus surge complicates India’s efforts to deal with these crises just 10 days after Cyclone Tauktae hit India’s west coast and killed more than 150 people. ....
