BHUBANESWAR: Minister of State for Energy Dibya Shankar Mishra on Saturday reviewed the performance of power sector which has failed to provide reliable and quality power to the consumers despite huge investment by Odisha government.
The Minister took stock of the infrastructure projects being executed by the State-owned Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (OPTCL), the progress achieved in village electrification, quality of power supply and consumer satisfaction under 5T and Mo Sarkar initiatives.
The review by the Minister assumed significance following announcement of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik that he will make assessment of all departments from May 15 to 25 on implementation of various government programmes and services. ....

Odisha: Energy min directs officials to expedite rural electrification | Bhubaneswar News


POWER-FUL MOVE
BHUBANESWAR: State energy minister Dibya Shankar Mishra has directed officials of the department to expedite the rural electrification works in the state.
During a recent meeting on the department’s key programmes, the minister also reviewed progress of various development projects and programmes relating to infrastructure, village electrification and implementation of 5T and Mo Sarkar initiatives in energy department.
Though 100% villages in the state have already been electrified, the minister asked the officials to complete household electrification in the next few months, said a source in the energy department.
The minister also reviewed progress of the Odisha Distribution System Strengthening Project (ODSSP) under which the state government has planned to set up 473 sub-stations of 33/11-KV capacity, which will address the low-voltage problem in rural areas. ....

Floods and cyclones contribute to maximum human deaths in India from extreme weather events (EWEs) but deaths due to heatwave and lightning need urgent attention, a new study has said.
States like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Kerala, and Maharashtra, with high populations, had the maximum mortality rates due to EWEs in the last two decades.
The analysis underscored a need to consider these multi-hazard-prone states with priority for developing disaster management action plans.
Experts underscored further improving observational and forecasting networks and a focus on climate-resilient infrastructure.
An analysis of deaths from extreme weather events (EWE) in India in the past 50 years has revealed that though tropical cyclones were the least frequent event, they caused 28.6 percent of the mortalities, second only to floods responsible for maximum human deaths.
