Healthy Oats project gets €2.7m research boost

Research in UCD and Teagasc is determining if old heritage varieties of oats show resistance to some of the diseases that cause yield loss for farmers today.
Hot on the heels of the establishment of the Oats Ireland Forum last week, the crop is now set to benefit from a €2.7m research investment.
The project, announced this week, will involve research in Ireland and Wales as part of a collaboration between University College Dublin, Teagasc, Aberystwyth University and Swansea University.
The ‘Healthy Oats’ project, which is being led by UCD, will receive €2.18m from the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Ireland-Wales Cooperation Programme. The balance of the cost is provided by the partners. ....

A new Oats Ireland Forum is to be established for the island of Ireland to help steer research priorities for the years ahead.
The crop, which once occupied around 900,000ha on the island, has dwindled to 25,000ha, but an increasing proportion of the crop is now subject to market premium.
Unlike other cereals, there has been very little active research on oats in recent decades, but the crop is now strongly established as an equine feed and gluten-free oats is adding to its importance in the human food market. But the crop has much more potential, and so the research community is now establishing a forum to help share knowledge and identify future research needs.
