The federal budget included help for low-income earners, first-home buyers and downsizers, but made no mention of the superannuation guarantee.
Here’s everything you need to know.
$450 threshold
The best superannuation news in the budget was aimed at the 300,000 Australians who are in work but receive no super.
The Treasurer announced that the $450-a-month income threshold below which employers do not have to pay super would be scrapped before the end of the next financial year.
Women in Super CEO Sandra Buckley said “this is a reform that we have been advocating for a long time”. ....

Federal budget 2021-22: Unpacking where money's being spent, and what it means for you

Big builds? You better believe it.
How do we pay for all this largesse? Thank the sugar hit from iron ore. Prices exceeded $US200 per tonne last week, driven by global demand and lower Brazilian output due to COVID-19. It’s hard to believe iron ore prices were “only” $US80/tonne in April 2020. Australia’s iron ore exports reached $AU116 billion in 2020, with Chinese imports exceeding 2019 totals, despite considerable bilateral trade friction.
Federal revenue growth from resources exports means budget repair should be more rapid. COVID-19 measures drove the 2020-21 budget into a $213 billion deficit, but strong minerals prices (despite coal’s fall) should improve the bottom line by $30 billion-plus. Moreover, Australians boosted household savings at a record rate in 2020, banking $130 billion, raising total deposits to more than $1.1 trillion. ....

Budget splashes cash, with $17.7 billion for aged care and a pitch to women

The Morrison government has brought down a big-spending, expansionary budget that forecasts Australia’s unemployment rate will fall to 4.75% in two years time.
But Australia’s international borders won’t be properly open for at least a year, according to the budget’s assumptions.
“Australia is coming back,” Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told parliament on Tuesday night.
“Employment is at a record high, with 75,000 more Australians in jobs than before the pandemic.
This budget will help to create more than 250,000 jobs by the end of 2022-23,” Frydenberg said.
“This budget secures the recovery and sets Australia up for the future.”
The deficit for next financial year is expected to be A$106.6 billion, with cumulative deficits of $342.4 billion over the forward estimates. ....
