Senior political journalist Sihle Mavuso reflects on his coverage of two Zulu royal funerals and the tense succession debate as he takes readers behind-the-scenes at the royal palace.
Beyond one’s call of duty as a journalist to write and inform the public, one indirectly records history. That was the case for me from March 12 to 18 and April 29 to May 8 this year.
The process of indirectly archiving history started on March 12, when King Goodwill Zwelithini, the longest-reigning Zulu king, passed away at age 72, throwing the monarch and the Zulu nation into mourning.

Nongoma - The raging tensions over the troubled Zulu monarchy have flared up again after Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi accused Princess Thembi Zulu-Ndlovu of telling lies by claiming he is imposing himself on royal affairs.
Buthelezi was responding to claims the princess made on Monday when she told an impromptu press conference addressed by “royal rebels” outside Khangela palace in Nongoma on Monday that Buthelezi was imposing himself in royal affairs.
Princess Thembi also said his time as the king’s and Zulu traditional prime minister expired when King Cyprian Bhekuzulu passed away in September 1968.

Nongoma – Unlike during the burial of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini in mid-March this year where the Zulu regiment of men played a prominent role, the burial of Zulu Queen Regent Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu will be dominated by a regiment of women.
This was revealed by the leader of the Zulu men’s regiment, Mlandeni “Mgilija” Nhleko, on Wednesday during an interview outside Khangela palace in Nongoma where the mourning for the queen is taking place.
Nhleko said while they would be present during most of the burial activities, this time around their role would be minimal.

Zulu Royals lash out at Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi
Zulu monarch King Goodwill Zwelithini's siblings have accused Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi of being a dictator
The late King’s sister Princess Thembi Ndlovu and brother Prince Mbonisi Zulu, along with four other princes, spoke outside Khangela palace, after Buthelezi, the monarchy’s traditional prime minister, allegedly locked them out of a meeting.
They have accused Buthelezi of excluding them in key family discussions and creating divisions in the Zulu royal household. This is just a fraction of the drama that has unfolded following the passing of Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu, the Regent of the Zulu nation, less than a week ago. She was King Zwelithini’s senior wife and the sister to Eswatini’s King Mswati.

This is the latest spat from the Zulu royal court in Nongoma, following heightened tensions after the king’s first wife, Queen Sibongile Dlamini, approached the courts on an urgent application, saying the king’s will had been forged and in a bid for her to attain 50% of the king’s estate as part of her civil union with the deceased.
