Leaving no stone unturned in this new suckler unit in Roscommon

During the week,
Agrilandmade the journey over to Loughglynn in Co. Roscommon to check out a new suckler unit on the farm of Christopher Scally.
Christopher, a winner of the Macra Na Feirme drystock young farmer of the year for 2020, took over the running of the family farm in his own right in 2019 and since then put plans in place to increase housing space on the farm, as well as putting in handling facilities.
Christopher described himself “as a bit of a perfectionist” and that comes across straight away when you walk into the farm.
The Roscommon-native runs a suckler herd of cows, made up predominately of Shorthorn and Angus-cross cows – with the majority calved down in the autumn time and some during the springtime. ....

Buildings Focus: Going the extra mile to create an environment for calves to thrive in

With the busy calving season on dairy farms winding down,
AgriLand got the chance to check out a brand new calf housing facility on a 180-cow farm in Co. Limerick during the week.
The new calf house – which can house up to 150 calves (30 in each pen) currently but could hold up to 300 when all pens are set up – is on the farm of Pierce Breen from Oola who farms alongside his father Liam and mother Carmel.
The Limerick-native, like many other dairy farmers across the country, decided it was time to upgrade on the current calf housing facilities that were already on the farm. ....

Buildings Focus: A loose shed and a top class handling facility in Co. Tipperary

Residing just outside Clonmore in Co. Tipperary is beef farmer John Maher, who has recently built a new loose shed and a first-class handling facility.
The secondary school teacher currently has 250 head of stock on the farm but has the capacity to run 300 on his 75ha which consists of good-quality grassland.
Up until last year, John was housing his stock between three different slatted sheds. He buys in weanlings and stores, which consist of Limousin, Charolais and Belgian Blues which are then all brought to slaughter.
John’s decision to build a loose shed was down to the fact that he felt the weanlings he was buying in were not reaching their target weight on the slats and having had a small dry bedded area on the farm already, he saw how well they did on straw bedding in comparison to the slatted sheds, while a new handling area was badly needed to connect all housing facilities on the farm. ....
