Recent PhD research from Massey University shows that the Building Amendment Act 2016 provides more logical reasons for demolition of historical buildings than preservation.
Dr Itohan Esther Aigwi, who recently graduated with a Doctor of Engineering, investigated  the impacts of the Building (earthquake-prone buildings) Amendment Act 2016 on the retention of historical buildings in New Zealand s provincial city centres, particularly in Invercargill and Whanganui.
Following the Christchurch earthquakes in 2010/2011 the government introduced the Building (Earthquake-prone Buildings) Amendment Act 2016 to ensure safety and improve resilience of vulnerable buildings to future earthquakes.   ....

For many British Columbians, the struggle for equal access and independence has been long. Our communities continue to have too many barriers for people living with disabilities, who make up nearly 25 per cent of the provinceâs population. Thankfully, societyâs views about disability are evolving. However, despite this societal shift and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms enshrining the protections of those with disabilities, many people continue to feel disenfranchised.

Seismic strenghtening would preserve Feilding's 'heritage precinct'

He decided to go ahead with strengthening, and employed Auckland-based company Seismic Performance to assist him.
The company offered package deals that included engineering, consent and construction costs. It would cost him $330,000. Records showed the building was valued in 2019 at $340,000.
Smith believed the expense would be worth it in the long run. He said those who did not care about preserving Feilding’s character, had to consider that selling non-strengthened buildings meant they “had to be worth nothing . ....
