Verdicts at Andrei Karlov murder trial to be read out in Ankara

Today, the 2nd Heavy Penal Court of Ankara will read out the verdict on Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov murder case.
At the end of November 2018, the prosecutor s office of Ankara sent an indictment to the 2nd Heavy Penal Court of Ankara. The case has 28 suspects, including the leader of the Fethullah Terrorist Group (FETO) Fethullah Gulen, as well as former civil servant Sahin Sogut, who allegedly ordered the murder of the Russian diplomat.
The suspects are accused of violation of constitutional order, being member of an armed terror group, and deliberate killing with objective of spreading terror. In addition, the indictment says the assassination is an act of provocation targeting Turkey-Russia relations, TASS reports. ....

The Observatory has been informed about the sentencing of
Eren Keskin, a human rights lawyer[1]
and the co-president of the Human Rights Association (İHD). Ms. Eren Keskin is the winner of multiple international awards for her peace and human rights work, including the 2018 Helsinki Civil Society Award, and was a finalist of the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders in 2019.
On February 15, 2021, the İstanbul 23rd Heavy Penal Court sentenced Eren Keskin to six years and three months in prison for “membership to an illegal armed organisation” (Article 314/2 of the Criminal Code) in the Özgür Gündem trial. Three of the eight other defendants in this trial were also sentenced to prison terms while three were acquitted and the file of the two others were separated from the main case. Ms. Keskin’s lawyers appealed the judgment and she remains free pending trial. ....

Heavy Penal Court will hear the case of Şebnem Korur Fincancı, Erol Önderoğlu and Ahmet Nesin whose previous acquittal was overturned by the Istanbul Regional Court of Appeals on November 3, 2020. A Turkish court Friday released a defendant who was previously remanded over the 2007 murder of prominent Armenian-Turkish journalist Hrant Dink, according to a judicial source.
In its interlocutory order on Jan. 6, the Heavy Penal Court no.14 in Istanbul ordered an arrest warrant for Volkan Sahin, a former gendarmerie officer, and he was remanded in following the decision.
During Friday’s hearing, the court issued another interlocutory order which released Sahin under judicial control.
Considering current evidence, the scope of the file, and that the matching statements of the accused and witnesses, the court cited the update in the evidence in favor of Sahin for its rule. ....
