Australian airline flight cancellations: Record number of flights cancelled due to lockdowns

There were a record number of flight cancellations in June as Melbourne s fourth lockdown and Sydney s burgeoning Delta variant outbreak hit interstate travel.
Figures from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics showed 24.5 per cent of all domestic flights in June were cancelled, the highest number since reporting began in November 2003.
This compared with just 2.5 per cent of flights cancelled in June 2020, albeit with a much lower number of scheduled flights. The long-term average for flights cancelled is just 1.8 per cent.
Jetstar had the highest number of cancellations, with almost 40 per cent of flights cancelled, followed by Virgin Australia (31 per cent), Qantas (29.1 per cent), QantasLink (13.5 per cent), Regional Express (11.1 per cent) and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (1.3 per cent). ....

Virgin Australia Group has announced fast-tracked plans to acquire new aircraft, create more frontline jobs and grow its network to further support domestic tourism.
The recovery efforts include the reintroduction of 10 additional Boeing 737-800 aircraft and the planned return of more than 80 per cent of the airline’s pre-pandemic domestic capacity by mid-June. Network operational changes will also allow the airline to redeploy Boeing 737 aircraft to other parts of its network over the coming months.
After a year of rolling state-based restrictions, pent-up travel demand is supporting the launch of several new and expanded services and frequencies on key leisure and business routes. Virgin Australia Group is committed to maintaining a market share consistent with its pre-COVID position. ....

Virgin Australia Group will reintroduce 10 Boeing 737-800s into its fleet, as part of a wide-ranging, “fast-tracked” domestic recovery plan which will also see the carrier resume hiring.
Underpinning the Brisbane-based carrier’s ambitious growth plans is its anticipation of a domestic travel boom in the coming months, and its commitment to restoring its pre-pandemic market share.

On the back of a healthy recovery in travel demand, Virgin Australia is looking to lease another 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with the first three to join the fleet this month. The leased planes are all former Virgin Australia aircraft returning to the airline. The Brisbane-based airline is also adding new routes, extending frequencies on existing routes, and hiring new employees.
