Paymark figures show South Canterbury people shopping local

The majority of the retailers I ve spoken to have been positive, Smith said.
Kidstuff owner Dorothy Tucker said her Stafford St business had been busier this Christmas compared to last year.
Business was up both online and at her store, so much so she took on three extra staff.
We ve been up ever since Covid but we worked hard to get product through and to get stock early for Christmas.
It appears people are supporting local. Let s hope it will continue.
The Cyclery owner, James Smith, echoed Tucker s comments and said local support had been sensational with South Canterbury people looking to buy in their own town and region rather than venturing elsewhere. ....

Talent quests and the holiday carnival queen naming meant the 16-day Caroline Bay Carnival concluded on a high.
Caroline Bay Association secretary manager Kevin Fahey said the 110th carnival was a bit of a roller coaster with good crowds despite bad weather forcing the postponement of four concerts.
The MetService recorded almost 30mm of rain in Timaru over half the 16 days of the carnival but Fahey said while there were no extra costs to the delays, it was inconvenient for the artists. ....

Weather: Severe thunderstorm brings torrential rain and hail to Timaru and Waimate

Heavy rain and hail on State Highway 1 near Makikihi and Hook from dashcam footage.
Business owners along Waimate’s main street have sandbagged their shop doors for peace of mind after a severe thunderstorm battered parts of South Canterbury.
Fire crews spent an hour pumping water from the area between Queen and Glasgow streets, Waimate, left behind by torrential rain and hail moving over the region on Sunday.
MetService had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Duntroon at 1.30pm, updating it over the afternoon as the weather moved over the Waimate District and onto Timaru, St Andrews, and Pareora, before heading offshore about 4.37pm. ....
