The surge in COVID-19 cases in rural areas and the lack of adequate beds in hospitals have led to some out-of-the box thinking from a group of farmers to make consultation available by phone.
This is resulting in early identification of symptoms and commencement of treatment to help avoid hospitalisation and deterioration of health to the point where oxygen saturation level dips and ventilator or oxygenated beds, which are increasingly difficult to come by, are needed. An initiative of the Karnataka State Sugarcane Cultivators Association, called ‘Gramina Janara Corona Seva Pade’, was launched recently with a helpline (97400 69310) dedicated to creating awareness on early diagnosis and treatment. ....

The farmers’ protest against the Centre and seeking the abrogation of 3 farm laws continued in Mysuru on Saturday.
While one group of farmers was led by Kurubur Shanthakumar of Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers Association, the other group comprised members of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, Hasiru Sene and Dalit Sangharsh Samithi.
The farmers led by Mr. Shanthakumar blindfolded themselves in front of the Gandhi statue opposite the court complex and sat on a dharna to draw attention to what they called the conspiracy of the government to break the farmers’ agitation. ....

Farmer leader Kurubur Shanthakumar has blamed anti-social elements for the violence in Delhi on January 26 and called it an attempt to discredit the farmers’ movement.
He said that the storming of the Red Fort was an attempt to besmirch the farmers who were protesting against the farm laws in a peaceful manner since more than 60 days
Mr. Shanthakumar, who is the president of the Karnataka State Sugarcane Cultivators Association, said the farmers did not lose patience all these days though the Centre was trying to wear them down through prolonged negotiations but without meeting the demands for an abrogation of the laws. ....
