Sustainable design, heritage, adaptive re-use win big at NSW Architecture Awards

Sustainable design addressing climate change, adaptive re-use, post-pandemic public spaces and collaborative projects were some of the highlights of the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2021 NSW Architecture Awards announced last week.
The winners were drawn from a total of 299 entries across 13 categories, with the most highly awarded projects sharing common attributes, according to NSW chair of juries, Peter Mould.
“Architects in NSW continue to address the challenges of climate change through sustainable and innovative design,” Mould said.
“Many of the awarded projects are existing buildings that have been adapted for new uses or had existing uses reinvigorated. This sustainably captures all the embodied energy and craft from the past as well as retaining their important contribution to local urban character. ....

Australian-made plywood centre of award-winning Monash Chancellery building


Within the striking, metal screened, square exterior of the new Monash University Chancellery building designed by ARM Architecture, two central elliptical voids can be found. These rise up breathtakingly to the sky and bring light into the middle of the building.
The stepped plywood balustrades that surround this void draw your eye up to the ceiling to take in the beautiful Australian motif, a Lino-cut by renowned artist Margaret Preston of Tea Tree and Hakea Petiolaris.
Robert Nestic, Director and Senior Engineer from TGA Engineers explained how he came to work on this significant piece of architecture and how Australian-made plywood became one of the heroes. ....
