Hastings Highlands council reviewed the draft of the municipality’s proposed Exotic Animal Bylaw during a second reading at its meeting on July 21. Before the vote, council took time to discuss the proposed bylaw.
Praising staff for their work on developing the bylaw, Councillor Tammy Davis explained to her fellow council members why she is ready to move forward with the bylaw.
“This is an extremely comprehensive and complete bylaw,” said Davis.
“I believe it’s fair and just. Our public input has given us the same feedback with no new recommendations. I don’t have any suggestions for any further changes, and I am prepared to pass it as is presented. And, if there’s no changes I am not sure why it would go for a third reading.” ....

Faraday Township council passed its own Exotic Animal Bylaw at its meeting on May 5. Other townships across Hastings County like Limerick Township have been passing their own similar bylaws over the past few months to preclude the keeping of exotic animals within their municipal borders. These bylaws are based upon a template provided by Hastings County for this purpose. After a brief discussion, council passed bylaw 18-2021, the Exotic Animal Bylaw for Faraday Township.
Faraday Township had posted notice of intent on its website of the impending bylaw passage on April 15, pursuant to section 11, subsection 3 of the Municipal Act 2001. With the controversy that has arisen from the Drysdale family in Hastings Highlands having exotic animals and wanting to keep them on their property, municipalities in the area like Limerick Township have been passing their own Exotic Animal Bylaws. Council considers seeking legal advice on county's bylaw template

Hastings Highlands Councillor Alex Walder has submitted a notice of motion appearing on the agenda at council’s March 17 meeting which, if approved, will direct staff to request professional legal advice on Hastings County’s Exotic Animal Bylaw template.
The template was created by Hastings County’s Planning and Development committee after Hastings Highlands council requested assistance with establishing a bylaw to regulate the keeping of exotic animals at their Nov. 18, 2020 meeting. Council decided to seek the county’s help in response to concerns for public safety and animal welfare arising from the community because of a proposed roadside zoo/safari business on Peterson Road. ....

Hastings County completes Exotic Animal Bylaw template | Bancroft this Week

Responding to a request from Hastings Highlands council to assist in the creation of an Exotic Animal Bylaw, Hastings County’s Planning and Development committee recently approved the template which could be used by its member municipalities to help regulate the keeping of exotic animals.
The county’s director of planning and development, Justin Harrow described the template in his report to the committee on Feb. 16 as “a good start” for member municipalities that do not have a bylaw. He also indicated that it can be a useful tool for other municipalities interested in updating legislation they may already have in place to regulate the keeping of exotic animals. After acknowledging in the report how Ontario is the only province in Canada that does not have legislation regulating exotic animals, Harrow recommended that county council approve the template bylaw, and share it with all its member munici ....
