Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key improves on 2020 Red Kettle drive | Longboat Key

The Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key started 2021 on a high note at its Jan. 7 meeting a 22% higher note than in the previous year, to be exact
The club gathered for their first meeting of the year and got the lowdown on their Salvation Army bell ringing campaign for the holiday season. Sarasota County Salvation Army development director Glenda Leonard addressed the club on the highs and lows of the season, noting that even though nationwide revenues were down, the Longboat Key bell ringing kettles brought in 22% more than last year s $24,094 total.

Around the country, the number of kettles was down 42%, Leonard said. However, the need for groups that the Salvation Army serves is up 155% in the wake of the pandemic. ....

Helping Hands: Churches and schools join to feed those in need

“Our call as Christians is to love the least of us and take care of them,” said Rev. Brad Treece, coordinator of the South Davidson Missional Network, speaking about a recent partnership with local schools to serve those in the community who are the most in need.
The South Davidson Missional Network’s most recent collaboration is with Silver Valley Elementary School to operate a food pantry and clothing closet.
The network, which is made up of 17 Methodist churches in Southern Davidson County, uses both physical items and monetary donations to supply items, such as canned goods, clothing, and other non-perishable items for a free pantry located inside the school. ....
