The trouble surrounding the Vihiga County health sector was laid bare during the Senate’s Devolution Committee meeting held following suspension of the implementation of the county’s budget for the 2021/22 financial year.
The county has been battling financial difficulties after the High Court in Kakamega issued a conservatory order stopping the implementation of the budget that had been approved by the County Assembly.
The petition challenging the legality of the budget was filed by former County Secretary Francis Ominde and political activist Joseph Simekha.
The two raised concerns regarding how the county government led by Governor Wilbur Ottichilo intended to use the budget. They also claimed the budget was never approved by the Cabinet. The Senate committee meeting had been convened to hear both sides over the budget stalemate and offer solutions. It was during ....

241 individuals have tested positive for Covid-19, out of a sample size of 2,515 tested in the last 24 hours.
The positivity rate also dropped to 9.6 percent - a significant improvement from a high of 22 percent cited by President Uhuru Kenyatta when announcing lockdown of five counties in March 2021.
The total number of confirmed positive Covid-19 cases now stands at 151,894 while the cumulative tests conducted so far are 1,605,847.
Of the cases announced today, 228 are Kenyans while 13 are foreigners, while 135 are male and 106 are female. The youngest is a seven-year- old infant while the oldest is 90- years old. ....

The county governments of Machakos, Makueni and Kajiado have suspended the issuance of new development permits around the Konza Technopolis area.
In a joint statement, the counties said the permits fall in the area falling within the ten-kilometer radius dubbed ‘Konza Planning Zone’.
The suspension takes effect immediately and will last for 90 days.
The decision was reached to enable a newly constituted Inter-County Joint Physical and Land Use Planning Committee to develop a plan to provide guidelines and standards for regulation of land use practices and general development within the zone. ....
