Calls for full-time wardens in city parks to combat anti-social behaviour

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are calls for wardens to be on the ground in the city’s main parks seven days a week to combat prevailing anti-social behaviour issues.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Imelda Byrne proposed the motion at this week’s City Council meeting- adding that the measure aims to keep the amenities safe and well maintained for the benefit of the public and biodiversity.
The motion put forward by Councillor Byrne calls for wardens to be in place at Terryland and Merlin Parks and Barna woods seven days a week. ....

Iconic Poolbeg chimneys may need to be 'encased in fibreglass or concrete'

A Dublin councillor says “we need to do everything we can” to preserve the Poolbeg chimneys.
It comes after it emerged the chimneys may have to be encased in fibreglass or concrete to be preserved.
Responding to a query from Green Party Councillor Claire Byrne, Dublin City Council said such measures may be necessary to ensure the landmarks’ long-term survival.
The council said: “It is accepted that the chimneys, although no longer in use, now have become an iconic feature in the Dublin Skyline.
“The issue is that the stability of the chimneys in the longer term may give rise to the need for the structures to be encased in a new concrete or fibreglass casing. These interventions are likely to alter the appearance and integrity of the structures as originally designed.” ....

In an effort to lift the nation s spirits as we face a difficult start to 2021, almost 100 towns across Ireland have agreed to leave their Christmas lights on until the end of January.
Traditionally, in a world without Covid-19 that is, we would see Christmas lights all over the country taken down on January 6th - the day that officially marks the end of the Christmas season. 
But now, a campaign started by 
Councillor Valerie Byrne in Elphin, Co.Roscommon has seen almost 100 towns across the country agree to leave their lights on and decorations up until the end of January in an attempt to help raise spirits as many people struggle their way through another lockdown.  ....
