The recent letter defending the ­practice of raising a pickup truck is way off the mark.
Auto manufacturers spend millions of dollars on every model of vehicle to ensure that the best engineering and design principle are used in the design and manufacture of those vehicles so they meet the Canadian vehicle safety standards.
These standards also apply to any manufacturer who modifies a vehicle for specialty purposes. These same standards protect everyone who operates a vehicle on our roadways by ensuring each vehicle can withstand the force of an impact between certain heights measure from the ground.
And part of any modified vehicle that is positioned outside of these heights presents a danger to the ­occupants of any other vehicle it comes into contact with. ....

BC SPCA holding silent auction fundraiser for Vancouver Island rescue centre

The BC SPCA is hosting a silent action for Vancouver Island s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC) which treats thousands of injured animals each year.
The silent auction will run from May 1 to May 15 and includes 75 items donated from local businesses and community members.
Some if the items include a stay at Abigail’s Hotel, gift certificates to popular restaurants like Il Terrazzo Ristorante and Bin 4, local brewery packages and a host of unique art and jewelry.
We’re so grateful to the people and businesses who donated the amazing items in our auction, said Ginelle Smith, manager of Wild ARC in a release Friday. ....

BC SPCA asks public to remove bird feeders after province-wide salmonella outbreak

The BC SPCA is asking you to remove your bird feeders for the time being.
The organization says it’s because a deadly salmonella outbreak that has spread throughout the province, especially on South Vancouver Island. 
“2021 has gotten off to a rough start for pine siskins on southern Vancouver Island and the rest of the province with a deadly outbreak of salmonella,” says Andrea Wallace, manager of wild animal welfare.  
So far in January, the BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) has admitted 43 pine siskin birds with many of them showing signs of disease but few surviving.   ....

A salmonella outbreak in the B.C. avian population has prompted the B.C. SPCA to ask the public to temporarily remove backyard bird feeders.
The pine siskin, a small brown and streaked bird in the finch family, has been hit hard by illness caused by the bacteria.
