RSV outbreak: GPs 'hammered' after increase in respiratory illnesses


Palmerston North Hospital is admitting between 10 and 20 babies a day with respiratory illnesses, including RSV.
“Although some of the very young children can get severe illness, the majority of people have more mild illness and should manage themselves at home rather than try and rush in for an appointment.
“Fever, cough with some yellow or green phlegm, [a] sore throat and feeling miserable are very common symptoms of the infection, but they seldom need any treatment.”
Palmerston North Hospital operations executive for healthy, women, children and youth Sarah Fenwick said the Midcentral District Health Board was experiencing a significant increase in babies and children presenting with respiratory illnesses, including RSV. ....

Covid-19 scare drives more people to doctors, increasing wait times


Extra staff were bought in where possible to help relieve the pressure and manage waiting times.
Think Hauora chairman Bruce Stewart said waiting times for non-urgent GP appointments were also frustrating for people.
“We are working closely with GPNZ on the recruitment of additional clinical roles to bolster the primary care clinical workforce in MidCentral, and we continue to support our general practice team network to implement technology solutions to improve patient experience and their ability to access the care they need.”
There were several options for people with mild cold and flu symptoms, starting with home care.
Other options included phone triage through some practices, which helped sort out who needed to be seen, and whose symptoms could be dealt with over the phone. ....
