Cornwall police appoint first female police chief

OTTAWA
Shawna Spowart has been named the new police chief in Cornwall, the first female police chief in the service s history.
The Cornwall Police Services Board announced Deputy Chief Spowart will take over as Chief of Police on Oct. 29, 2021.
The 26-year veteran has held several positions in Cornwall, including Officer in Charge of the Community Patrol Division, Inspector of Field Operations, and most recently, Deputy Chief of Police.
We are pleased to see Shawna Spowart become the first female police chief of the Cornwall Police Service, said Glen Grant, chair of the Cornwall Police Services Board.
She has demonstrated strong leadership skills through her many years of service with the CPS and partnering agencies. Her modern approach to policing will assist the Service to evolve with the changing needs of the community and we look forward to seeing her many accomplishments as Chief. ....

Spowart named Cornwall police chief

CORNWALL – Cornwall has its first female chief of police.
Cornwall Police Services Board chairman Glen Grant announced this morning (June 3) that Shawna Spowart, deputy chief of police, will assume the highest position within the force in October.
In addition to being the first female chief in Cornwall, she also becomes one of only a few female police chiefs in Ontario, a position she is “deeply honoured” to hold, she said during an acceptance speech.
In an interview with Cornwall Newswatch, Spowart says she envisioned being chief of police after becoming deputy chief three years ago.
“I think I had an idea that Chief (Danny) Aikman wouldn’t be here for an extended period of time so, I did have my eyes set potentially moving into the role of chief of police. I certainly had hoped that I would get the opportunity to present myself to the board as a potential candidate,” she said. ....

A 44-year-old man from Cornwall is facing several charges after police responded to a disturbance call.
Police alleged that while responding to the call, officers found the man in the company of his ex-girlfriend, contrary to conditions imposed after a prior incident. Police also alleged he identified himself as someone else. Officers then determined he was the same person for whom arrest warrants had been issued for failing to attend for fingerprints, and a breach of release order.
