THUNDER BAY – Sooner would have been better, but union leaders are thankful teachers and other school employees in Thunder Bay will be allowed to start booking COVID-19 appointments on Thursday.
The move, announced last week by the province, should go a long way to returning classrooms to normal operations by the fall, especially if school employees are able to get their second dose in August.
Carlo Cappello, president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association’s Thunder Bay branch, said it was news his membership has been waiting to hear.
“It was definitely welcome news for teachers and other education workers that will be getting vaccinated. The hope is we will get both vaccinations before the start of the school year in September. That would be ideal,” Cappello said. ....

THUNDER BAY – Local groups are echoing calls from across Ontario to accelerate the vaccination of education workers, saying it could be crucial not only to protect the health of staff but also to keep schools open.
The provincial government announced last week it would add education workers to its current phase two vaccine roll-out, beginning with those who provide direct support to special education students and all staff in the provincially-designated “hot spots” of Toronto and Peel. ....

The announcement of the return to in-person learning in the city came Thursday from Dr. Janet DeMille, the medical officer of health for the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU), who credited an improvement in the number and rate of COVID-19 cases in the district in recent weeks.
Teacher unions worry about safety
But the decision to return to in-person learning came against the recommendation of the teachers union.

THUNDER BAY - Local students who have been learning at home for the past six weeks will be back in the classroom after the April break and it is anticipated the next academic year will look much like it used to.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has informed the local school boards that in-person learning can resume on April 19.
“In-person learning is vital to the overall health and wellbeing of students and I recognize that suspending this has imposed additional challenges for students and families,” said Dr. Janet DeMille, medical officer of health with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit in a statement, “While this was necessary given the impact that community cases were having on schools, it is important that this resume, of course, with all appropriate prevention measures in place to ensure the ongoing safety of students and staff in these challenging times.” ....
