Kazakhstan repartiates 12 Kazakh nationals from Syria

Kazakhstan s Foreign Ministry said yesterday that it evacuated 12 of its citizens, including seven children, from Syria.
The ministry added that the repatriation process came through the country s intelligence agency, the National Security Committee.
Of those returned,  the ministry explained, citizens who were involved in terrorist acts will face trial, while women and children will be placed in a rehabilitation programme.
Two of the evacuated children are orphans.
In 2019, Kazakhstan launched a campaign to return its citizens who had been involved in terrorist activities in Syria. ....

NUR-SULTAN, 19th January, 2021 (WAM) President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has presented a new initiative consisting of a third package of political reforms aimed at increasing the institutional development of the political system in Kazakhstan and strengthening mechanisms for protecting human rights.
The implementation of this initiative will strengthen the system of protecting human rights, expanding civic participation, developing parliamentary policies and a multi-party system, and imparting more democracy to the country, a statement by the Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry in the capital, Nur-Sultan, said. ....

Tokayev responds to Russian lawmaker who called territory of Kazakhstan a gift from Russia
AKIPRESS.COM - Kazakh President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev has rejected recent comments by two Russian lawmakers describing Kazakhstan s current territory as being a “gift” from Russia, saying such provocative remarks aimed to spoil relations” between the two neighbors.
Nobody from outside gave Kazakhs this large territory as a gift,” Tokayev wrote in an article published in state-run newspapers on January 5.
Kazakhstan must stand against provocative actions by some foreign citizens who are trying to spoil neighborly relations, he said, without mentioning the two Russian politicians, RFE/RL reports. ....

Many Kazakhs are likely upset and perhaps a bit worried by some of the comments and actions heard in Russia recently that have questioned Kazakhstan’s existence as a country.
Since December 10, two deputies from the Russian State Duma, the lower house of parliament, have described Kazakhstan s current territory as being a “gift” from Russia, echoing remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2014 that “Kazakhs never had any statehood” before the collapse of the Soviet Union in late 1991.
Vyacheslav Nikonov, Duma deputy and head of its Education and Science Committee, appeared on The Great Game program on Russia’s First Channel on December 10 for a show dedicated to the anniversary of the signing of the Belovezha Accords on December 8, 1991, that dissolved the Soviet Union. ....
