U-turn on complete lockdown in Hassan

Hassan district administration, which announced a four-day complete lockdown in a week on Wednesday afternoon, did a U-turn by evening. The State-wide lockdown, as it has been in effect since April 27, will be in force in Hassan too.
Earlier in the day, Minister for Excise K. Gopalaiah, who held a meeting with elected representatives and officers, had announced that the shops that sell essential items would be allowed to function only between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There would be complete lockdown on four other days in the week.
The Minister had said that the decision had been taen as the number of COVID-19 cases had been increasing in the district. It would be difficult to contain the spread of the infection unless a stricter lockdown was imposed, he had said. ....

Following the ban on slaughter of cattle in the State, the demand for mutton has increased and sheep rearing has become a lucrative business, said members of the Congress and the JD(S).
During a debate on calling attention to the notice of Poornima K. (BJP) on the delay in the payment of compensation for the sheep killed in accidents and rain havoc in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, K.M. Shivalinge Gowda (JD-S) said that demand for mutton increased following the implementation of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Ordinance, 2020. ....

Despite the Opposition Congress and the JD (S) members’ strong reservation against the Karnataka Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishments (Amendment), Bill, 2020, the Legislative Assembly passed the Bill.
Rizwan Arshad, K.R. Ramesh Kumar, U T Khader (all Congress), A.T. Ramaswamy, and K.M. Shivalinge Gowda (both JD-S) termed the Bill as “toothless” since it has no stringent provisions to punish owners of firms cheating depositors.
But the Government pushed the Bill saying that the Centre’s laws and RBI regulations were adequate to punish those indulging in fraudulent transactions. ....
