Flood leaves tragedy in wake

Alan and Leah Wolford s farm worker had to travel some distance in their tractor to find some of the drowned calves.

Caught between the floodwaters of the Thomson River and Rainbow Creek, both fed from Cowwarr Weir spill, the yearling and autumn-drop heifers on Alan and Leah Wolford’s farm didn’t stand a chance.
Of 50 missing heifers, the family has found 10 all dead and caught with flood debris on neighbours’ farms some of them found kilometres from the paddocks they were grazing.
“I had to get the cows up first. By the time I went back for the young cattle, they were gone,” an emotional Alan Wolford said. ....

Farmer-focused mental health toolkit funding boost
An online portal aimed at helping improve the wellbeing of farmers and their communities is being expanded, thanks to a $200,000 Marshall Liberal Government grant.
The $200,000 funding injection from the $21 million Drought Support Package will be used to further develop the ifarmwell website, which provides practical information for farmers about ways of coping with challenging and difficult circumstances.
Minister of Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham said industry has embraced the online toolkit during these challenging times.
“The health and wellbeing of our farmers is paramount as they work through these challenging times, particularly with the ongoing drought,” Minister Basham said. ....

The scarcity of seasonal workers continues to impact growers as crop losses climb to over $45 million this week.
The labour shortage is a result of Federal and state government decisions to restrict the movement of people through the Australian border in order to manage the human health impacts of COVID-19.
Sixty-five separate crop losses from five states and territories have now reported on the National Crop Lost Crop Register.
Growcom’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Barnard, said the current labour shortage is impacting businesses and livelihoods industry wide.
“We are witnessing a concerning number of growers reporting not just financial losses, but also a decline in mental health, strain on personal finances, and doubt surrounding their future participation in the industry,” he said. ....
