On a day almost lost now in the mists of time, I started going to college. One of the memories of that first, disorienting day is my startled amusement at a two-syllable word meaning, approximately, ‘useless’, written on the back of a marble bust of a former principal. The bust was placed with its unfortunate back visible when one turned on the first-floor landing; its position left me wondering for the rest of my life about the acrobat with the perfect lettering. (I prefer that to the simpler explanation of the bust having been brought there from somewhere else.) I did not associate it with the years of violence, statue-breaking and tragedy that preceded our entry into college maybe I should have but it gave me a sense of history happening in spite of the cold whiteness of marble. ....

Sarnath’s Dhamek Stupa is near Mahamaya flyover
Noida: After the models of the ghats of Varanasi, Taj Mahal and Sarnath’s Dhamek Stupa, replicas of seven more monuments will be established in the city. All these replicas will be made out of recycled waste. The Noida Authority is also preparing the design of a waste-to-wonder park in Sector 114, officials said.
The three structures the ghats of Varanasi, Taj Mahal and Dhamek Stupa have been established off the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway near Mahamaya flyover to greet the commuters visiting the city. TOI has learnt that work is on to design models of Bada Imambara in Lucknow, Jhansi Fort, Krishna Janmabhoomi in Vrindavan and Buddha temple of Kushinagar. “Replicas of several other important monuments situated in various parts of Uttar Pradesh will be made. The horticulture department is also working on setting up a dedicated park in Sector 114, which will be themed on the waste-to-wonder concept,” said Authori ....

New Delhi: A day after a Varanasi court Thursday ordered an archaeological survey of the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Gyanvapi mosque premises to resolve a long-standing dispute involving the two shrines, the BJP welcomed the move pointing out it has faith in the judicial process while opposition parties responded in a guarded manner. Prominent Muslim leaders though, said they would file an appeal in high court. ....

Krishna Janmabhoomi: Fresh plea seeking digging in Agra's Red Fort filed

A fresh plea has been filed in the Mathura mosque land case, seeking the court s directions to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) or any other competent authority to scientifically dig out Lord Krishna s sculpture buried under the stairs of a small mosque next to Diwan-e-Khas at the Red Fort in Agra by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1669 .
The petition filed on Thursday also demanded that the recovered idols be safely placed at the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple complex.
The court will take up the matter on April 19.
The petition filed by advocate Mahendra Pratap Singh, stated that several historians have mentioned in their articles that Mughal ruler Aurangzeb took many sculptures, including that of Lord Krishna, from Mathura to Agra after demolishing the Thakur Keshavdev ji (Krishna Janambhoomi) temple. ....
