Through three programmes, the company is looking to grow its merchant base, bringing offline stores online and also partnering with entrepreneurs to open omnichannel retail stores.

BENGALURU/MUMBAI: The Competition Commission of India (CCI) cleared Tata Digital’s acquisition of a majority stake in Bigbasket without conditions. Tata Digital’s interest in Bigbasket first became public last October. The acquisition of a 64.3% stake in Bigbasket will make Tata Digital the leading player in e-grocery, setting the scene for a big battle with Amazon, Flipkart, JioMart and SoftBank-backed Grofers.
Tata Digital is a 100% arm of Tata Sons, the promoter of the $106-billion airline to automotive conglomerate. It will acquire 64.3% in Bigbasket’s online business-to-business arm Supermarket Grocery Supplies (SGS), the CCI said. In December 2013, Albinder Dhindsa and Saurabh Kumar started Grofers out of Gurugram. They wanted to solve the on-demand pick-up and drop-off services for Indian consumers in partnership with local stores, which were struggling to solve this problem.
Grofers stepped in with an aim was to ensure that consumers benefited on the quantity and quality front. As of 2021, transactions between merchants and consumers are much more organised and many gaps have been filled– thanks to an entire ecosystem s tech-led approach to solving problem statements.
Now, the Softbank backed e-grocer, which is focusing on private label products to drive overall sales growth, is expecting its gross merchandise value (GMV) to grow 4X to around Rs 30,000 crore by 2022. ....

After suffering and recovering last year, India’s online grocers have once again been debilitated by Covid-19’s relentless resurgence.
The Covid-19 crisis has likely not hit its peak yet, but Indians are already experiencing a deja vu of April 2020 while checking out carts as staple products are running out and delivery timelines have become long.

Unlike last year, both BigBasket and Grofers claim to have access to sufficient stocks. But they admit that same-day and next-day deliveries are being shipped three or four days later.
