Tajikistan’s forces shell Kyrgyz territory, Bishkek says
Tajikistan’s forces started shelling Kyrgyzstan’s territory on Saturday, the Border Service of the Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security reported.
In the area of Arka in the Leileksky district of the Batkensky region (Kyrgyzstan) the Tajik servicemen opened fire on Kyrgyz citizens’ houses, the statement said.
According to the Border Service, the situation on the Kyrgyz-Tajik section of the state border remains tense. The border units of the Kyrgyz Border Service of the State Committee for National Security are on the defensive.
The situation on the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan near the Golovnoy water intake facility escalated on April 28, after clashes had sparked between residents of the two countries’ border areas. The EU on Friday (30 April) said it “regretted” a serious escalation of tensions at the border between the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan, resulting in numerous casualties.
The clashes, which are not occurring for the first time, are apparently due to a lack of clear delimitation of borders and claims by both sides to scarce water resources.
According to
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, which has services for both Central Asian states, Kyrgyzstan raised to 13 the number of people killed in clashes along a disputed segment of its border with Tajikistan before a cease-fire was announced by both sides.

Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan trade blame for cross-border shelling

MOSCOW (AP) Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan traded blame Thursday for cross-border shelling and clashes that left at least four people dead and dozens injured in a conflict over water, the latest outburst of tensions between the two ex-Soviet Central Asian neighbors.
Troops from the two countries exchanged gunfire for most of the day around a water supply facility near the village of Kok-Tash in western Kyrgyzstan on the border with Tajikistan. More than 800 Kyrgyz residents were evacuated from several villages engulfed by the clashes.
Officials from the two countries declared a cease-fire late Thursday and agreed to pull back troops from the area. But a Kyrgyz police spokeswoman in Batken, Damira Yusupova, said heavy firing broke out again before dawn on Friday, according to the Interfax news agency. ....

Kyrgyzstan Says 13 Killed, Thousands Evacuated In Tajik Border Clashes


Tajikistan, an authoritarian state with tight control over the flow of information, has been more quiet on the extent of causalities, saying only that two Tajik citizens sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital on April 29 and that another seven locals were injured in clashes.
Correspondents for RFE/RL s Tajik Service reported from the area that at least 12 Tajik citizens, including four military personnel, were killed and dozens of others injured in the clashes, which broke out on April 28 after residents on both sides of the border started throwing stones at each other.
Officials in the southwestern region of Batken said earlier in the day that 13,500 Kyrgyz, mainly women and children, were evacuated from the area, while two individuals were missing. ....
