Christchurch climate strike organisers 'hopeful' after meeting with mayor

Organiser Rātā Airey said they wanted free, green public transport in the city, increased funding for climate education in schools, and council-owned Christchurch City Holdings Limited (CCHL) to put an immediate halt to its controversial project to build a new international airport near Central Otago’s Tarras.

Dalziel refused to comment on the Tarras Airport proposal on Friday, causing strikers to start yelling over her: “What are YOU going to do?”

On top of School Strike 4 Climate s six national demands, Christchurch campaigners have three local requests.
“We really want to push free, green public transport. We also want increased funding for climate education is our schools, and for Christchurch International Airport and Christchurch City Holdings Limited to put an immediate halt on building Tarras Airport,” Airey said.

Christchurch Airport created widespread shock last July, when it announced it has bought four properties near Tarras in Central Otago, right in Queenstown Airport’s backyard, and wanted long-haul jets flying there within 10 years. ....

Labour-aligned Christchurch City councillors wanted public say on bus firm sale

Red Bus was created in 1991 and some staff had worked there since its inception.
A report from CCHL given to councillors states: “CCHL do not consider the ownership/operation of Red Bus has any strategic value or benefit to the city .
In December last year, Red Bus confirmed a $5.3m operating loss on the back of an $100,000 loss the year before.
Public consultation
At the public-excluded council meeting on May 7, People’s Choice councillor Melanie Coker put forward an amendment to consult on the sale.
The vote was lost, six to 10. Deputy mayor Andrew Turner abstained.
The councillors who wanted public consultation were Jimmy Chen, Melanie Coker, Pauline Cotter, Anne Galloway, Yani Johanson and Jake McLellan. All are members of People s Choice. ....
