July 4 Hazel Street murder case set to be heard by Grand Jury


A preliminary hearing was held Friday morning in Christian District Judge Foster Cotthoff’s courtroom on the July 4 Hazel Street murder case, which was ultimately forwarded to be heard by the Christian County Grand Jury.
The suspect accused in the murder, Leon Grimes, 49, appeared in Cotthoff’s court along with his private defense attorney Ted Shouse.
Grimes is accused of shooting and killing Calvin Buckner, 28, at a party in the early morning hours of July 4.
As the hearing began, Christian County Assistant Attorney Katherine Foster called Hopkinsville Police Detective Jason Sears to the stand to testify on what evidence had been accrued against Grimes. ....

Oak Grove arson case to be heard by grand jury

The arson case against an Oak Grove man accused of setting fire to a mobile home on Zackary Street with his wife inside will be heard by a Christian County Grand Jury.
Oak Grove police say that on April 18, 50-year old Charles Smalls had been in an argument with Charlene Smalls and then used lighter fluid to set fire to the home in the vicinity of a bedroom where his wife was inside.
Detective James Carter testified Wednesday morning that Charles Smalls claimed the fire was an accident, but that the state arson investigation didn’t jive with that story. ....
