Tralee school wins overall prize at Young Social Innovators of the Year Awards 2021

Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School in Tralee has been crowned overall winner at the Young Social Innovators of the Year Awards 2021.
The school won the gold award for their ground-breaking Red Flags ‘Break the Silence
’ project, which tackles the issue of toxic relationships.
Killarney Community College won the YSI Social Media Award, for their project to raise awareness about the false perception of Autism, ADHD/ADD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia.

Over 80% of Kerry Leaving Cert students progress to third level

More than eight in ten Kerry Leaving Certificate students this year progressed to third level.
According to the annual feeder school report in the Irish Examiner, there were 1,641 Leaving Cert students in the county with 1,363 or 83% going onto third level education.
Three Kerry secondary schools had a 100% rate of students progressing to third level; Pobailscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Tarbert Comprehensive and Killarney Community College.
The most popular third level option for the 2020 Leaving Cert students was IT Tralee, followed by UCC, University of Limerick and Cork Institute of Technology.

Honours for Killarney group at National Garda Awards

Killarney students who have given their time and energy to help families affected by dementia have been honoured at the National Garda Awards.
The dynamic Be Dementia Aware group from Killarney Community College is only one of two Kerry groups honoured at the national awards.
For the past two years the Killarney group has been raising awareness about dementia. They began their campaign as they felt dementia, and its consequences for the sufferer and wider family, was a subject that not everyone was comfortable talking about.
The enterprising and compassionate students created a website, an information brochure on the subject and produced and launched innovative and educational videos informing people in the community about dementia. ....
