Over the past four-five months, Patton International, a Kolkata-based electrical conduit fittings manufacturer, has been sending, on average, two container loads of goods every day by road to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai. The decision to skip Kolkata port next door and get consignments transported 2,000 kilometres by road to Mumbai shows desperation arising out of acute shortage of containers at Kolkata port and prevailing uncertainty over the transit time to the final destination, the US.
Our containers used to get loaded at Kolkata and go to Colombo for transhipment to Europe and the US. Post the pandemic, our goods began to take 90-100 days to reach the US through this route. Shortage of containers, and congestion at Colombo port, are leading to delays in transhipment. We had no choice but to ship through Mumbai where container availability is better; the shipment will reach the US within 45-50 days, including the time taken for road trans ....

Long queue at police station for travel papers

KLANG: The South Klang police station has seen long lines of people queuing up to get interstate travel passes since the second round of the movement control order was implemented.
South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Shamsul Amar Ramli said they saw an average of 1,007 people per day asking for passes in the last 15 days of the MCO.
He added that police issued 15,116 passes from Jan 13-31 and 2,147 passes from Feb 1-3.
“The total number of applications were 17,263 and 1,954 were rejected. We have a daily ration of 785 applications, ” said ACP Shamsul Amar. ....

Two arrested in Klang, house used for storing drugs raided


KLANG: A house in Persiaran Seri Junjung in Port Klang here, which was used to store drugs, was raided by the police.
South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Shamsul Amar Ramli said the house was raided on Tuesday (Jan 5) shortly after two men were detained in Telok Gong, Klang, on the same day.
Checks on the suspects revealed 455g of heroin.
Further investigations then led police to the house and the raiding team discovered 1.8kg of heroin as well as a pistol and a magazine, he told a press conference at the South Klang police headquarters on Thursday (Jan 7).
ACP Shamsul Amar said the drugs, worth about RM20,000, were believed to cater to those in Klang. ....
