Ministry set May 10 as World Migratory Bird Day

Migratory Bird Day in 2021 was held under the theme of
Sing, Fly and Glide like birds.
Migratory birds are species that migrate twice per year. They travel between habitats on a seasonal basis between places where they enjoy advantages to their survival for part of the year and these migrations can span across many countries and even continents, with birds flying hundreds or thousands of kilometres to reach their destinations.
“So, the work of conserving these migratory birds calls for participation and collaboration between the various countries that they fly over and travel to,” the environment ministry said in a Facebook post. ....

Bird song is not only enjoyable to listen to, but scientists and site managers can use it to evaluate the health of a forest. In 2020, a study was published by the Area de Conservación Guanacaste (Costa Rica), where bioacoustics were used as an indicator for biodiversity. The results show that the older the forest, the noisier it is, due to an increased number of birds. Older and healthier forests are more diverse, and better environments for the species they support. ....

Scaly-sided Merganser is one of the world s most beautiful ducks, yet it is also among the rarest. The species, which is classified as Endangered, has a very small population, which is suspected to be undergoing a continuing and rapid decline as a result of habitat loss, illegal hunting and disturbance.
Although many birders see it on wintering grounds in the likes of South Korea and Japan, Scaly-sided Merganser breeds in the Russian Far East (85% of the population is in the Sikhote-Alin mountain range) and the far north-east of China. Here it favours pristine river valleys surrounded by primary forest, relying on the presence of natural cavities in mature trees in which to breed. However, logging has reduced the availability of suitable habitat across much of its range. ....
