The BJP won all 31 district panchayats, 70 out of 81 municipalities and was far ahead of main rival Congress in 231 taluka panchayats as counting for the second phase of local body polls in Gujarat was underway on Tuesday. NEW DELHI: The BJP is set to retain power in all six municipal corporations of Gujarat, winning at least 449 of the total 576 seats till Tuesday evening. Counting is still under way in a few constituencies.
The result will come as a shot in the arm for the saffron party, which suffered a sound defeat at the hands of the Congress in the recent Punjab civic polls.
