How servers at a Winnipeg retirement home are spreading joy with paper bag art

WINNIPEG
A group of servers at a Winnipeg retirement home are using paper bags to spread joy and cheer among the residents.
With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the cancellation of group activities, many of the retirement home residents have been spending much of their time alone in their suites.
This is why the servers at the Boulton River Heights Retirement Community have been giving the residents some joyful drawings by turning the paper bags that the residents’ meals are packaged in into works of art.
“Because of COVID and the whole tough time for the residents not being able to see their families, we wanted to do something special for them,” said Sabrina Antifaiff, a server at the Boulton River Heights Retirement Community. ....

Premier Pallister defends education overhaul

WINNIPEG
A day after the provincial government announced new plans to change the education system in Manitoba, Premier Brian Pallister defended the decision.
The proposed legislation that was put forward would see 37 school divisions as well as elected school boards and trustees eliminated if it were passed.
Pallister said the move would benefit both parents and students.
We wouldn t make a change that wasn t in the best interest of children and their families, he said during a news conference Tuesday morning.
The school divisions would be replaced with a central education authority.
We re empowering the school community councils to have way more power and influence than they ve had in the past. ....

Manitoba students' Cree rendition of children's song earns praise from Canadian singer Raffi

What started out as a class language project about animals of the north for a group of Manitoba students is now garnering attention from an internationally known Canadian singer.
With the help of their teacher and class great-grandmother, Kindergarten to Grade Two students from the Isaac Brock Cree Language Immersion Program learned to sing a well-known children’s song “Baby Beluga” in Cree.
Colleen Omand, a Cree language bilingual teacher, said the class made a music video using their own drawings with the help of others in the school.
Omand submitted the video to the Manitoba Aboriginal Languages Strategy’s Culture and Language contest. ....

The worst areas for litter in Winnipeg, according to a new report

The majority of the snow has melted in Winnipeg and that has unearthed what was lying underneath for the past several months trash.
Take Pride Winnipeg has released its yearly litter index for the city, which measures the amount of trash on city streets on a scale of one to four, with one being no litter and four being a lot of litter.
Tom Ethans, who is the executive director of Take Pride Winnipeg, said this is the earliest the organization has finished the index.
Now we can get people out there picking up the litter that s left over (from) the winter, and there is a lot of it, he said. ....

Construction underway on new 40-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg

Construction has officially begun on a new Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg, that will help provide a haven for Manitoba families with sick or injured children.
The new 40-bedroom house will be located on Juno Street, close to the HSC Children’s Hospital, and will serve all pediatric disciplines.
The house will help Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Manitoba help more families, address unserved families and wait times, and increase its ability to support more families in need of pediatric mental health, rehabilitation, bone marrow and organ transplants.
“We are growing our mission by 186 per cent,” said Wendy Galagan, CEO of RMHC Manitoba. ....
