To my mind, the most conspicuous example of that was in his portrayal of Ino-san, a character in a movie titled Gakko (School).
Over 50 and illiterate, Ino-san learns to read and write at a night school that offers junior high school education.
He falls in love with his teacher, played by Keiko Takeshita, and tries to express his feelings to her in a postcard he writes for the first time in his life: Please be my bride. If you do, I will study every evening .

The report confirms the actor passed away in late March at the age of 88. For fans of
One Piece, they might not know who Tanaka was on his own, but they might recognize his features. After all, the actor inspired the design of Admiral Kizaru. Creator Eiichiro Oda based many of the admirals on famous Japanese actors, and Tanaka is the final one to pass on.
Actor Kunie Tanaka, who became a household name playing an awkward but devoted father in a long-running TV drama series, died of natural causes on March 24. He was 88.
Tanaka played Goro Kuroita in “Kita no Kuni kara,” which ran between 1981 and 2002. The TV drama followed the lives of a family in Furano, Hokkaido.
Prior to his breakout role, Tanaka served as a foil to some of the top movie stars of the 1960s and 70s.
He appeared in Akira Kurosawa’s “Sanjuro” as a young samurai in a group that turned to Toshiro Mifune for help to counter clan elders with nefarious intentions. He also had a supporting role opposite Ken Takakura in “Abashiri Bangaichi” and appeared in a number of yakuza movies starring Bunta Sugawara.
