Trees cleared as safety upgrades start on busy road

Almost $20 million will be splashed as part of a $415 million economic stimulus package announced in October last year.
Of that, $18 million worth of safety works to be carried out on Steve Irwin Way between Beerburrum and Palmview.
A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesman said a design layout would be provided to stakeholders and the community in coming months.
This section has experienced an increase in traffic over the years, the spokesman said.
The joint federal and state-funded project will improve overall safety and reduce the potential for head-on, rear-end and run-off-road crashes.
Early works to clear vegetation on the western side of Steve Irwin Way, from Irwin Road to Mellum Creek bridge, was completed last week in preparation for construction. ....

Authorities say they will audit driver behaviour outside a Calliope school following a series of complaints.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads will be monitoring motorists during pick-up and drop-off times outside Calliope State School after several complaints were made about parents driving on the footpath along the Dawson Hwy.
A concerned father said he had been campaigning the issue for five years to ensure the safety of his son, a Year 4 student at the school.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said it was hugely dangerous after he witnessed a near accident involving school children. ....

Changes revealed for Sunshine Coast rail duplication

He said the changes included improvements to the vertical geometry on the Beerburrum Rd overpass connection to Steve Irwin Way.
The rail track has also been shifted slightly to the west near Evans Rd at Glass House Mountains to make construction easier and to minimise impact on the Matthew Flinders rest area and Tibrogargan Creek.
Mr Ryan said the overpass near Glass House Mountains had also moved further south to Barrs Rd to align with Sunshine Coast Council s strategic network planning.
The jointly-funded $550 million Sunshine Coast rail upgrade will result in three new bridges being built, three park n ride facilities expanded as well as the duplication of the section of rail track between Beerburrum and Beerwah. ....

Rail duplication design changes worry MP

He said he had been unable to get solid answers on where the multi million-dollar project was at.
“Sadly, due to politics, I’ve not been able to get detailed briefings on what the latest design looks like, between Beerwah and Beerburrum,” he said.
“I sought a briefing before the election and basically got told ‘Sorry, we can t show you that at the moment we’re in discussions with the Federal Government’.
“I get that those kind of discussions can occur but I do know they re having very detailed discussions with landholders about what the design looks like.
“And that s frustrating because I’m actually here to help.” ....
