Resources and ag sectors welcome State Govt promise to intervene if extended COVID laws 'unfairly' lift council rates

Three peak bodies have joined forces to welcome an assurance by the Queensland Government it can use existing powers under the Local Government Act to defend their industries from ‘unfair and inequitable’ council rate increases.
An increase in rates could potentially be levied under a proposed amendment to new COVID-19 laws introduced last year, which are due to be debated in Parliament this week.
Queensland Resources Council (QRC), Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) and AgForce representatives appeared before the government’s Economics and Governance Committee inquiry into new COVID-19 legislation over the past month, providing a joint submission to speak against a draft provision to extend councils’ ability to increase rates outside the standard, annual budgetary process. ....

Farmers, graziers 'demonised' as reef killers, says Senator

Senator Susan McDonald has slammed the Queensland Government for demonising farmers and imposing overly harsh restrictions on them.
Senator McDonald was instrumental in establishing a Senate Inquiry last year into the evidence used to impose water quality targets on cane and cattle farmers.
The Inquiry found the State Government had ignored the fact farmers were already altering their practices to reduce environmental impacts.
It also stated run-off from land mainly affected just three per cent of the total Great Barrier Reef area.
The latest water quality report card showed significant improvement, with nitrogen run-off into the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon dropping 25.5 per cent since 2013. ....
