Assembly polls: Close fight between BJP, TMC in Bengal, DMK ahead in TN


Early trends for counting of votes on Sunday in the high-stakes assembly elections in four states and a union territory show that the TMC and challenger BJP were locked in a neck-and-neck contest in West Bengal, while the DMK had an edge in Tamil Nadu.
In Assam, the ruling BJP-led NDA was leading in 22 seats, while the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress is ahead in 15 places, according to initial trends available from counting of postal ballots in Assam, officials said.
The ruling LDF in Kerala was leading in 75 of the total 140 seats while opposition UDF was ahead in 56 segments as counting of votes for the April 6 assembly elections got underway. ....

Tamil Nadu assembly polls: Early trends indicate edge for DMK

Early trends indicated an edge for the DMK with the ruling AIADMK following behind and key leaders of both fronts were leading in their respective segments.
About an hour following the commencement of counting of votes for the April 6 Assembly elections, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami was leading in his home segment of Edappadi in Salem district and leader of the opposition and DMK president M K Stalin was ahead in Kolathur constituency here.
While the DMK combine was ahead in 30 segments, the AIADMK was leading in at least 18 constituencies.
Indications showed that the DMK was ahead in constituencies including Kurinjipadi, Neyveli, Virudhachalam. ....

The ruling Trinamool Congress was ahead of the BJP in the keenly watched state of West Bengal, while the saffron party-led NDA was leading in Assam and the DMK in Tamil Nadu, according to latest trends for Assembly polls.
In Kerala, the ruling LDF is leading in 88 of the 140 Assembly constituencies while the opposition Congress-headed UDF was ahead in 50 segments.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was leading by 3,351 votes in his home turf against his nearest rival C Raghunathan of the Congress, according to Election Commission figures. ....

The opposition DMK-Congress alliance is retaining its lead in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly though its gap with the AIADMK is shrinking. The DMK and its allies are leading in 129 seats. The ruling AIDMK – which started the day with a lead on 95 seats is now leading on 104 seats.  The majority mark stands at 118.  The DMK has not been in power in the state for a decade, and this time the party and the AIADMK are contesting without their towering leaders, J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi whose deaths have brought a huge change in the political landscape. ....
