That’s why the Sir Winston Churchill High School student started Checkmate, a student-led group focused on making chess more accessible to underprivileged youth in Calgary.
“What we’re really trying to do is make chess more accessible and make youth more interested in chess,” said Saim, 16.
“Growing up playing chess for quite a long time, I keep it really near and dear to my heart. . . . We want to provide children with a way of playing chess on their own, because a lot of the time there’s financial barriers that prevent people from being able to access chess sets or the resources to help them learn mo ....

Stamps coach raises more than $30,000 for charities
CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The eighth annual Corey Mace turkey drive was a bit different due to pandemic restrictions; however, what didn’t change is the way the Stampeders’ stepped up.
A total of $32,964 was raised by the Calgary Stampeders’ defensive line coach.
“Our family is beyond ecstatic about this year’s results,” Mace said. “We understood the challenges the pandemic had presented but we wanted to push through and try to help in any way possible. Yet again, this city exceeds every expectation or bar we could set. To achieve these results this year with the growing number of those in need is something all supporters should take pride in.” ....
