RIGA - A larger outdoor gathering of children and young people like the planned School Youth Song and Dance Celebration sounds absurd, and given the current epidemiological situation, impermissible, Gunta Laizane, chief infectious disease physician at the Children s Clinical University Hospital, told journalists Monday.
Laizane believes that mass events involving gatherings of children are fraught with infection risks and should not be recommended.
With Covid-19 cases in Latvia s adult population rising again, the rate of infections among children is growing as well, and this rise also correlates with people s growing negligence to safety measures . ....

RIGA - Vaccination of children against Covid-19 is not yet being included in Latvia s national calendar, Dace Zavadska, chairperson of the State Immunization Council and head of the Family Vaccination Center at the Children s Clinical University Hospital, said in an interview with Diena daily.
In Zavadska s words, the Covid-19 vaccines were originally meant for adults, especially seniors, and that at the beginning of the pandemic transmissions in children were very rare.
Now, the situation has changed - adolescents catch the virus more often because their desire to socialize is especially strong, which is why scientists have started to work on vaccines designed for this age group. ....

Neurosurgeon Wahbe granted Latvian citizenship

On Thursday, April 22, Saeima decided on granting citizenship to neurosurgeon Basel Jakub Wahbe.
Wahbe has lived in Latvia since 1999, when he started studies at the University of Latvia s Faculty of Medicine. He has obtained a doctorate degree and a specialist s qualification in neurosurgery. Until 2020, Wahbe worked as a neurosurgeon at Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital and is currently the head of neurosurgery for the Children s Neurology and Neurosurgery Clinic at the Children s Clinical University Hospital, also specialized in epilepsy treatment.
As the Saeima Citizenship, Migration and Social Cohesion Commission notes in the draft law, the hospital describes Wahbe as a distinguished professional, understanding and supportive colleague, a fair professional enthusiast who, with his personal qualities, also inspires young residents to study neurosurgery.
