New Zealand’s COVID-19 response highlights the need to centre children’s rights in all government planning, especially if we are to be prepared for future shocks and crises, Commissioner for Children Andrew Becroft says.
A report from the Children’s Convention Monitoring Group , published on Children’s’ Day, outlines what has worked for children in the COVID-19 response and recommends ways to better implement children’s rights in laws, policies and practices.
“We keep hearing that COVID-19 is going to make outcomes for children and young people worse, but that’s only if we choose to let it,” Commissioner Becroft says. ....

Completing household jobs and attending conferences remotely considered for youth offenders

Changes implemented during lockdown to how young people serve sentences and report in may become a permanent fixture.
Youth offenders who were allowed to mow lawns and do other household jobs to complete community service sentences during lockdown may be given the option permanently.
During the level 4 and 3 lockdowns in 2020 Oranga Tamariki, which oversees youth justice, adapted community service sentences so young people could do jobs at home like mow lawns or make Covid-19 posters. They were also able to attend family group conferences or other court-related meetings remotely.
The changes were so positive, it says, Oranga Tamariki is considering making them a long-term option. ....
