New Delhi: The BJP-led government in Goa is trying to find an alternative legal channel to ensure safe passage of livestock to the state after neighbouring Karnataka recently passed a stringent anti-cow slaughter Bill.

With Maharashtra passing the anti-cattle slaughter act four years ago, Goa relies solely on Karnataka for bulk of its beef consumption supplied either through transport of live buffalo and bull or carcass from the neighbouring state’s abattoirs.

Over the the past 72 hours, with the state already starting to feel shortage of beef, the Goa government has come under growing administrative and political pressure to facilitate meat to a tourist state gearing for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
With the BJP government in Karnataka proposing a more stringent law on banning cattle slaughter, the Pramod Sawant-led Goa administration on Wednesday convened a meeting between cattle suppliers from Karnataka and meat traders of Goa to look for a legal channel for safe passage of livestock to the state. ....

Panaji: Goans are angry as beef is missing from their plates due to shortage of supply. The anger reached to such a level that Chief Minister of the State Pramod Sawant promised to look into the matter.
It may be mentioned that after the restrictions imposed by the Maharashtra Government in 2015, Karnataka had emerged as its biggest supplier for Goa. Majority of the beef sold in Goa is sourced from Belgavi District.
On an average, Goa consumes nearly 25 tonnes of beef every day and the demand rises during the tourism season which stretches from October to March. ....

Panaji, Dec 16 (IANS): Goa s beef traders have urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to use his good offices with the BJP leadership to prevent Karnataka s Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill, 2020 from being notified. The law was passed amid controversy in the Karnataka state assembly last week.
In a letter to Sawant, the Quraishi Meat Traders Association of Goa has said that beef is a part of the staple diet in Goa s multi-cultural society and is consumed by the visiting tourists and if the law came into force in Karnataka, it would have a severe impact in the coastal state. ....
