Delft Researchers Realize The First Quantum Network Based On Entanglement
A team of researchers from QuTech in Delft has built the first quantum network that connects three quantum processors. In addition, in a proof-of-principle demonstration, they performed two essential quantum network protocols. Their results are an important step towards the future quantum internet and have now been published in Science.

Thanks to the Internet, computers from anywhere on earth can be connected to each other. Many applications have emerged that were completely unimaginable at the time of the creation of the Internet a few decades ago. Researchers around the world are currently working on the first implementations of the quantum internet - a network that connects quantum devices, such as quantum computers and sensors. Where the information on the current Internet is sent in bits (which can have the value 0 or 1), the future quantum Internet will use quantum bits that can be 0 and 1 at the same time. 'A quantum internet makes a range of new applications possible, from uncrackable communication and cloud computing with complete privacy of users to extremely accurate time registration, 'says Matteo Pompili, PhD candidate and member of the research team. A quantum trick with photons gives machine learning a speed boost

Machine learning, a process used to train artificial intelligences, can take an extremely long time – but a quantum trick could massively speed things up for tasks involving particles of light called photons.
In reinforcement learning, an algorithm runs through the same problem over and over again and is given a numerical reward only when it reaches the correct answer. That process teaches it to find the correct answer more quickly when pitted against similar problems later on.

Now Valeria Saggio at the University of Vienna in Austria and her colleagues have added a quantum twist to accelerate this process. They set up an experiment involving a photon moving through a wave guide and ending up in one of four possible states. They tasked an AI with making sure the photon ended up in one particular state, and rewarded it for doing so.

The internet as we know it is fast, but with the promise of a quantum internet, it may be instant. Researchers are actively addressing challenges to make this a reality.
Today, the conventional internet enatils a coherent stream of photons traveling down a fiber-optic wire, carrying a logical one or zero somewhere around eighty percent the speed of light. Tomorrow, a pair of entangled photons—each called qubits—are both one and zero (superposition) and send data in near-instantaneous time. That’s "quantum internet."
