BEIJING-Four years ago, Peng Xiaobo, who had been working in the research, development and management of spacecraft technology for 25 years, established Beijing Interstellar Glory Space Technology Co Ltd to pursue his dream of advancing commercial spaceflights.
Peng, CEO of the company, believes the value of the aerospace industry has not been fully tapped. Our goal is to become a global leader in commercial spaceflights, he said. ....

New Insight into Nonlinear Optical Resonators Unlocks Door to Numerous Potential Applications

New Insight into Nonlinear Optical Resonators Unlocks Door to Numerous Potential Applications
Optical resonators, which circulate and confine light (for instance in lasers), are currently used in a variety of applications of all sizes-from pinpoint light sources smaller than the width of a human hair to kilometer-scale sensing devices such as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) experiment that detects gravitational waves.
Devices known as optical parametric oscillators are among the widely used nonlinear resonators in optics; they are “nonlinear” in that there is light flowing into the system and light leaking out, but not at the same wavelengths. Though these oscillators are useful in a variety of applications, including in quantum optics experiments, the physics that underpins how their output wavelength, or spectrum, behaves is not well understood. ....

Physicists Just Reached a New Speed Limit For Moving Quantum Information

Physicists Just Reached a New Speed Limit For Moving Quantum Information
23 FEBRUARY 2021
Scientific progress towards a quantum computing future has so far involved lots of different breakthroughs in lots of different (but related) fields, and there s now a new one to report: the discovery of a crucial quantum speed limit.

This latest research answers a fundamental question – how fast can a quantum process be? It s a useful piece of information to know if you want to build a quantum computer or a quantum network, as it tells you some of the limitations inherent in the system.
Thankfully for those of us who aren t quantum physicists, the team behind the new study has provided an easier-to-understand analogy which involves a skilled waiter rushing around with a tray of drinks. How quickly can the waiter get all the drinks distributed without spilling any of the liquid? ....

Gravity May Play a Tiny But Important Role in The Microworld of Particle Physics

Gravity May Play a Tiny But Important Role in The Microworld of Particle Physics
21 FEBRUARY 2021
Launch yourself from a great enough height and it won t take long to see which would win in a battle between gravity and the forces that bind solid ground.
Gravity s relative weakness, at least compared to the strength of electromagnetism and the nuclear forces, appears to limits its power to phenomena on the vast scales of planets and galaxies.

For this reason, together with the challenge of marrying general relativity with quantum physics, physicists tend to hand-wave gravity s role in the formation of particles by fudging it with a rather arbitrary correction factor. ....
