th edition of the European Small and Mid-Cap Awards will take place in November 2021 during the European Commission s SME Week in Portoroz, Slovenia.
Small and mid-cap companies are vitally important in supporting the European economy. Equity is needed to buffer exogenous shocks and will be needed more than ever following the recent crisis so that public equity capital markets can perform to the best of their ability in helping businesses refinance their growth once the situation has subsided.
Our Awards this year are even more significant as it is exactly these types of companies that will be key to re-equitising the European economy. We therefore need to recognise and congratulate them on their successes to date. ....

The Federation of European Securities Exchanges (FESE) is delighted to announce that the winner of the FESE De la Vega Prize 2021 is Jonas Heese, the Marvin Bower Associate Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, for his paper “Does industry employment of active regulators compromise oversight?”
Industry employment of active regulators is the subject of debate. The paper observes that the practice has long raised concern that it leads to “regulatory capture, whereby regulators receive financial compensation from firms in exchange for lax oversight.” In response, most public regulators have implemented policies that require regulators to resign from industry employment upon taking office, effectively prohibiting industry employment for active regulators. On 3 May 2021, business and individual investors organisations – namely BETTER FINANCE, ecoDa, European Family Businesses, EuropeanIssuers, Federation of European Securities Exchanges (FESE), Invest Europe and SMEUnited - sent a joint letter to the European Commission to convey their shared concerns regarding the upcoming proposal on sustainable corporate governance.
