USask receives $300K from FCL to renew research chair focused on co-operative governance

“The research completed in the first term was valuable in that it created an innovative framework to support improving co-operative governance,” said Sharon Alford, FCL’s president/chair of the board. “There have always been governance challenges across different sectors, but modern pressures on the co-operative sector underscore the continued need to be accountable to members and maintain our relevance for future generations. This is crucial not only for the CRS, but all co-operatives in Canada and around the world.”
According to Dr. Murray Fulton (PhD), inaugural CRS Chair and director of the JSGS USask campus, governance is critical because it is a key determinant of organizational success. ....

Joint venture formed between Federated Co-ops, Blair's ag retail locations

Started 73 years ago, Blair’s provides innovative crop input as well as animal nutrition products and services to local area farmers.
Ron Healey, FCL vice-president of agriculture and consumer business, said these locations will continue to run in their current form under the same name, brand and staff without inclusion of co-op membership
“Blair’s business will continue to run the way it is now. For farm customers, they won’t see any difference. It will be business as usual at Blair’s,” Healey said.
“In the longer term, there is a possibility that farmers will see perhaps some additional products and services, some programs made available by the result of this partnership.” ....

We can not allow that to happen with fossil fuel companies, whose financial interest is to push the continued use of carbon-heavy technologies, carbon-heavy fuel sources. We need to distance ourselves from that and not allow them to gain legitimacy through their association with us, LeBlanc said.

Co-op launches Indigenous gas bar program

Western Nations gas bars are a partnership between Co-op and Indigenous communities in Western Canada.(FCL)
A new type of gas bar will be coming to roadsides and communities throughout Western Canada.
Co-op has partnered with Indigenous communities and organizations to launch the Western Nations gas bar brand.
Indigenous communities will be able to work with Co-op to build and run a local gas bar with Western Nations branding. They will also have access to grants, as well as building, training and management support.
Cam Zimmer, communications and public relations manager at Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL), says Western Nations is going to be a win-win for Co-op and Indigenous communities. ....
