The Uganda Medical Association says the medical interns should carry on with their strike
Uganda Medical Association (UMA), a body that brings together all qualified and duly registered medical doctors in the country has expressed support for the ongoing strike by the intern doctors.
The association said Sunday that the strike should continue until government heeds onto their demands. Last week on Monday, the intern doctors under their umbrella Federation for Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI) laid down their tools, stating that the government had failed to improve their welfare and the current poor living conditions.   ....

Patients across government health hospitals have been left stranded as medical interns continue to strike over allowances. 
On Monday this week, the interns under their umbrella body; the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI) laid down tools, demanding that government increase their allowances from Shs 960,000 to Shs 3 million and also provides them free housing.
Medical interns in Uganda provide a great service as the country’s patient-doctor ratio as recommended by the World Health Organisation is still low. It is estimated that over 80 per cent of patients at hospitals are served by interns. URN visited several hospitals in Kampala and found that the work had stalled as a result of the strike. ....

Government has ordered the striking medical interns to either get back to work or leave the programme and return when the government is able to meet their allowance demands. 
On Monday this week, medicals interns laid down their tools in protest over the government s failure to increase their allowances in the 2021/2022 national budget and provision of free housing. The government has earlier committed to increasing the allowances from Shs 960,000 to Shs 3 million.
Medical interns are health workers who have completed their undergraduate training in the medical field from various universities within or outside the country. These include medical doctors, dental surgeons, nurses, midwives and pharmacists. They are deployed in government facilities to undergo 12 months of supervised training and turn the theoretical knowl ....

Nurses, midwives call off strike after govt offer of shs 44.9 bn


This is after the government finally yielded to pressure and committed to provide at least Shs44.9 billion  for their lunch allowances.
The Union’s president Justus Cherop says they have been convinced to call off their industrial action because this time they have commitment from the finance minister himself.
The Nurses and midwives under the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union went on strike over lunch allowances estimated at Shs70bn, vowing not to return to work until the money was included in the 2021/2022 financial year budget.
They now return to work after the government promised to provide Sh10,000 to each nurse per day for 22 days as opposed to the Shs15,000 pledged by the president. ....
